A STORY FROM OUR AGENCY:

57% of local youth in your community report they are not involved or connected to a community support. We are hosting conversations about this data. Local youth and adults are working together to build trusted relationships and a sense of youth belonging in their community.

Buffalo County Youth Advisory Board (YAB) are youth who represent your community. YAB took initiative to be trained in mental health resources to help their peers access supportive resources and reduce stigma. They took the initiative to be trained in QPR to learn how to phrase questions, persuade peers to seek help. They met with 988 Suicide Prevention Hotline leadership and local law enforcement to learn how the systems work. They discovered 911 and 988 were not connected, leaving a caller at risk when calling 911 to hang up to call 988. They presented to Governor Pillen and State Senators a 5-minute skit which motivated legislation to bridge 988 and 911. Today, if a person or youth in Buffalo County calls 911 with a mental health crisis they are seamlessly connected to 988. Nebraska was the first state to move this legislation forward and Buffalo County was the first to implement the new technology.

YAB is building trusted adult partnerships and a sense of belonging in your community. YAB is a program of Buffalo County Community Partners.
