A STORY FROM OUR AGENCY:
We hosted a world music assembly at Humann Elementary School with Daniel Martinez and his band Jarana. The program focused on culture and identity and featured many interactive activities. At the end, a special education teacher approached Daniel, visibly shaken and with tears in her eyes. One of her students was autistic, non-verbal, and selectively mute. The teacher was moved during the concert by how he started dancing. She had never heard the student speak before, but when she went to dance with him, he said, ‘I like this music.’ It was a powerful moment for both her and the student. Daniel was also touched and shared that he has three autistic children and that they also respond to music in surprising and uplifting ways. This is the power of the arts.
