A STORY FROM OUR AGENCY:
Fifteen-year-old Aaron* was enrolled in a diversion program following charges related to drug paraphernalia and accessory to auto theft. He had initially been referred to a different youth-serving organization that ultimately did not provide the kind of environment that was conducive to his growth, so the city referred him to The Bay. He began volunteering with The Bay, and got especially invested in the monthly Art and Thrift event. He connected with the youth vendors, and found himself building a community. Throughout his diversion hours, he repeatedly reiterated to The Bay staff how surprised he was to learn that a space like The Bay existed for teens like him. After completing his diversion program, and proudly showing us his certification of completion from the court, he asked if he could continue volunteering and shared, “I really enjoy being here. Thank you for letting me be.” *name changed
