A STORY FROM OUR AGENCY:
I’m originally from South Sudan, in Africa. When I came to the United States, I decided to give back to this country by serving in the military. During that time, I saw a lot of things. When I came back, I became somewhat isolated. I was dealing with many things. Growing up, I was taught that a man has to be tough — and being tough meant hiding every problem. It felt like nobody cared. When I learned about peer support and understood where to get help and how to cope with the challenges in my life, I realized this was a way to help myself and also help others. It benefited me a lot by validating my concerns. Many people in peer support have been through difficult experiences, and when they are able to recover from them, they learn how to be well. They try to help others feel well too, with humility. They don’t try to change you — they try to support you. Through peer support, I learned to accept failure and learned how to ask for help. I found it to be a supportive tool that helped me through my darkest days. Now I find peace just knowing that there is genuine care out there. The world is big, and there are many problems. We’re not going to solve them all at once — but we can address them one at a time and try to make a difference.
