A STORY FROM OUR AGENCY:
In early November, as federal decisions paused SNAP benefits, families across our community felt the impact immediately. It wasn’t gradual. It was a sudden gap at the kitchen table, at the gas pump, and in covering basic needs. At the Foundation for Lincoln Public Schools, we recognized the pattern. During COVID-19, emergency requests surged. What once felt temporary has become a growing, ongoing need, with more families each year turning to us for short-term support. Through our Student Emergency Fund, we provide up to $200 per family annually. This support often means groceries, utility payments, gas, or rent assistance. It is designed to be fast, flexible, and responsive. But this year, demand exceeded even our expectations. When the fund opened in August 2025 with $36,000, we expected it to last into fall. Instead, it was gone in three weeks. During the 24-25 school year, we distributed $99,000 total, meaning 36% of last year's total was depleted immediately. As November approached, the pressure only grew. With Thanksgiving nearing and SNAP benefits paused, the need became urgent. So we acted. With the support of generous donors and community partners, we raised over $90,000 in just weeks, reopening the fund before Thanksgiving. Because when families are stable, students can focus. That changes everything for their futures, their classrooms, and our entire community.
